Finding beauty in homemaking with hearty food, a cozy home, and living simply.
Hi, I’m Marissa!
Welcome to Hearty Homemaking, a place where I share hearty recipes, cozy home projects, and living simply all while we renovate our cabin in the woods.
About Me
Hi, I’m Marissa, welcome here! I’m a mama to three children with another on the way. My husband and I bought our first home when our oldest was eighteen months. A little cabin in the woods that really needed some TLC. We have been working on it for five years! Even though we (read- husband) have accomplished so much we still have many projects on our ever growing list. With each child we’ve added to our family our home has also expanded and improved. There’s nothing like nesting for baby’s arrival!
When my husband and I first got married we didn’t have intentions to live the way we do now. After finding out I was pregnant, you could find me deep in research. Natural birth, cloth diapers, holistic remedies, all the stuff I could get my hands on. My husband started his first garden and became interested in beekeeping! Something about almost being parents flipped a switch in us both. We have attempted a garden every year since and my husband finally made his beekeeping dreams come true last year!
Passion Projects
Birth
Many of my acquaintances spoke highly of natural birth. I also had a friend who became a doula and she was always sharing what she learned with me. My first baby was born at home and we continued that trend with our next two babies! I intend to have my fourth at home as long as my pregnancy continues to be low risk. An important study shows that home birth for low risk women can reduce the rate of birth interventions. Home really is where I feel the most comfortable and helps me not be fearful while in labor. Homebirth is one of my passions. I can see myself advocating for women in the homebirth space in the future.
Homesteading
When I was about ten years old my parents started a little hobby farm after moving into an old farmhouse. The infrastructure was already there so they thought, “hey why not”? We ended up with chickens, a mini horse, two pygmy goats, and a small garden. It became too much for my parents to keep up with but I’ll never forget that experience! It made a huge impression on me.
My oldest child was about three when I couldn’t get that experience out of my head. I kept telling my husband that it would be “so nice to have chickens to give our kitchen scraps to”. About a year later he built a coop and those chickens were our gateway into homesteading! We now have meat rabbits, goats for milk, and bees for our own raw honey!
Homemaking
Along with acquiring the animals I started to learn more homemaking skills. Baking bread, cooking a whole chicken, making a gallon of homemade yogurt, growing my own sourdough starter, etc. Learning these skills showed me that I am capable of learning new things. I have a lot more skills I want to acquire on my bucket list!
Blog
This blog is where my passions and dreams collide. I want to live my dream life with my husband and children. I also want to encourage others to do the same. There certainly seems to be a revolution going on. “Getting back to our roots” is becoming a phrase I hear a lot, and I am here for it! When you surround yourself with others who understand your desire and are pursuing it, it can mean the world.
